When in sLOVEnija: taste the LOVE cheese and visit Velika planina

Trnič is a hard cheese in the shape of pear from Velika Planina, beautiful mountain in the heart of the Kamnik – Savinja Alps.

It is made from cottage cheese, cream and salt, decorated with special ornaments stamped into the cheese with artisan carved wooden sticks called “pisave” or seals. The cheese is left to dry for two to three weeks over an open fireplace.

As a proof of love and fidelity herdsmen would have given Trnič cheese to their beloved in the autumn, at the end of grazing season. They were always made in pairs and decorated with the same ornaments. Herdsman kept one of them and the other one was given to their beloved, who kept them for several years.

Although the tradition of producing Trnič cheese gradually stopped, the knowledge has been preserved. Nowadays Trnič Hard Cheese is a culinary speciality of Kamnik area and can be used in everyday cuisine.
